Full Mouth Reconstruction –
The “Dental Rehabilitation”

By Houston Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Craig Mabrito

Dr. Mabrito performs full mouth reconstruction for severe dental cases where multiple components of the mouth have broken down and there is a significant loss of tooth structure. Full mouth reconstruction therapy uses multiple dental procedures to correct relationships with the gums, bone, muscles, and teeth. Full mouth restoration is more than addressing the surface problems; Dr. Mabrito also investigates the causes of your problems so they can be eliminated and you can have a long-lasting
healthy smile.

Full Mouth Reconstruction Dental Evaluations

During the comprehensive patient evaluation Dr. Mabrito will study the vertical dimension, centric relation, speech, muscle tone, and your equilibrated bite to determine the extent of your full mouth reconstruction. Dr. Mabrito will analyze the reason for your extensive tooth wear by studying the location of the wear, symptoms and signs, and information collected during your patient interview to determine whether it was due to the mechanics of your tooth, a chemical cause or a combination of the two.

Indications for full mouth reconstruction may include:
  Frequent headaches or migraines
Pain or soreness around your jaws
Facial, neck, shoulder and/or back pain
Worn, chipped, cracked or loose teeth
Unexplained congestion or stuffiness in your ears
Discomfort that seems to move from tooth to tooth
  TMJ (temporomandibular joint syndrome)

Conditions Contributing to Dental Erosion

Dry Mouth
People who suffer from dry mouth are more prone to dental erosion or the wearing down of the tooth structure. Saliva protects the teeth and without adequate saliva production extrinsic and intrinsic acids can lead to dental erosion.

Factors contributing to dry mouth:
  Work and sports dehydration
  Caffeine addiction
  Gastro-oesophageal reflux
  Asthma
  Diabetes
  Hypertension
Other systemic diseases or syndromes that cause dry mouth

Anorexia and Bulemia
Stomach acid from constant purging eats away at your teeth, wearing down the external tooth structure over the years. It can also destroy the inner portion of the tooth leaving only a thin wall of enamel, causing teeth to become very weak and subject to breakage even under normal chewing pressure. Some damage is so severe that the nerve of the tooth begins to show. Overtime the teeth will begin to change color, shape and length. The damage caused from these disorders requires extensive reconstructive dental therapy to regain functionality and aesthetics.

Dental Reconstruction Options
Once the appropriate treatment has been determined, Dr. Mabrito will proceed with the reconstruction by applying veneers, implants restorations, or crowns.

Tooth Implants
Tooth implants are an optimal solution for missing teeth or to replace severely eroded teeth.  Implants involve surgically inserting a metal screw into the gum line for the placement of an attachable abutment to secure the new tooth. If multiple teeth need to be replaced, a partial or complete prosthesis is used and requires two or
more implants.

Dr. Mabrito works with a network of specialists that can provide the surgical placement of the implant. He uses his ColorMatch Shade Analyzing Software to successfully match tooth shades and create a natural smile. Once the implant is fully healed, Dr. Mabrito will place the new tooth on the implant abutment.  More on Implant Restorations.

Porcelain Veneers
Dr. Mabrito assisted in the development of veneers and has used porcelain veneers in restorations since their initial availability. Veneers are thin custom-made shells designed to cover the front side of teeth. They offer solutions for permanent stains and for teeth that are abnormally small with side gaps, poorly shaped or slightly crooked, and chipped, worn, or eroded at the gum line from over brushing.  More on Porcelain Veneers.

Dental Crowns
Crowns are used to cap or completely cover a tooth in order to rebuild broken or decayed teeth, strengthen teeth, or improve the cosmetic appearance of a tooth.  Crowns cover the entire visible portion of the tooth around the gum line.  They are often used to offer extra support to a tooth with a large filling where only a small amount of the original tooth remains.  Crowns are also used to hold a dental bridge in place or to cover a dental implant.
